Abstracts
Headgear constitutes an important field of study within research on Ottoman costume history. However, when the literature produced in Turkey on Ottoman headgear is examined, it becomes evident that significant methodological problems exist in this field. In a large portion of the existing studies, the typology of headgear has been constructed on the basis of a limited number of local sources and has not been systematically compared with Western visual sources. Over time, this situation has led to the emergence of a terminology that does not fully correspond to historical evidence. In this article, the literature on Ottoman headgear is examined critically, and typological problems are discussed particularly through the examples of dardağan and makdem. In addition, by evaluating the data provided by early visual sources such as the Rålamb Album in terms of morphological analysis, it is argued that the typology of Ottoman headgear should be reconsidered.
